You came to Fort Walton Beach for some much-needed time away and some springtime Florida fun. No matter how long you’re in town, there’s plenty to see and do. You’ll enjoy a mix of fun, excitement, adventure, and activities on your trip, but you’ll also want to make sure to take a break from the fast pace. There are plenty of places in and around Fort Walton Beach where you can enjoy a romantic Fort Walton Beach spring break picnic for two or an outdoor meal a large group can enjoy together. Pets are welcome at many locations, with leash laws enforced.
John Beasley Park
West of the Okaloosa Island Boardwalk, the park is a beautiful spot for a picnic. It also has easy beach access for when you’re ready to spend time on the sand. There are pavilions, designated picnic area with tables, restrooms and changing rooms, and plenty of parking. There are two dune “walkovers” leading to the Gulf, where there are seasonal lifeguards. Its proximity to the boardwalk means you can order carry out from one of the restaurants or pack your own meal at your vacation rental.
James Lee Park
Head to the east end of Destin to find James Lee Park. Enjoy quick and easy beach access after your picnic. There’s an expansive boardwalk, including restaurants where you can order carry out for your picnic. Enjoy three pavilions, over 40 picnic tables, and a playground for the kids. Access the beach by any of nine “walkovers” for quick access to Gulf fun. Take advantage of nearby restrooms and stay all day to play in the water.
Henderson Beach State Park
This Destin location has over 6,000 feet of scenic shoreline, punctuated by stunning dune rosemary and sand pines. There’s quick and easy beach access to the Gulf, as well as plenty of park fun. Explore the park’s boardwalks – where you’ll be able to spot wildlife – to work up an appetite. Set up your picnic in one of the pavilions or set up your spot in the sun. The kids will love the playground, and everyone can enjoy activities like fishing and geocaching.
Newman C. Brackin Wayside Park
Better known as The Boardwalk, the park is on Okaloosa Island next to the fishing pier. You can spread your picnic blanket on the ground or choose one of over 40 picnic tables. There are also several pavilions, restrooms with changing rooms, and dune “walkovers” for quick access to the Gulf. Work up an appetite or work off a delicious meal with volleyball nets, and kids will love playing at the playground.
Ross Marler Park
The Fort Walton Beach Park was refurbished in 2006 and is a great place for outdoor fun and picnicking. Aside from your picnic, be prepared for activities like boating, swimming, and fishing, with easy access to the Choctawhatchee Bay. There is boat trailer parking and two boat ramps for those looking to get out on the water after a meal. There are also self-parking spaces as well as a tram stop! Plan to spend the day and take advantage of the park’s many amenities, including two sets of bathrooms, multiple pavilions, grills, a designated/roped off swimming area, and walking trail. There’s also a playground for the kids to burn off any remaining energy.
Liza Jackson Park
The park features 1,000 feet of waterfront where you can enjoy a day on the sand along with your picnic. Boaters will want to take advantage of the boat ramps and spend some time out on the water after a swim or casting a line off the fishing pier. There are several pavilions, picnic area, playground equipment, and the all-important restrooms, so you can spend the whole day soaking up the sun.
Take a stroll or bike ride to the sand and water closest to your accommodations. It could be a secluded area where not many visitors – or just the locals – hang out for a quiet time away from the crowds. You can set up for a day at the water, including a picnic lunch or dinner. Enjoy being close enough to your accommodations that you can use the private bathrooms at your vacation rental.
