What Is It?

Kiteboarding is a surface water sport that brings together the elements of snowboarding, wakeboarding, windsurfing, paragliding, skateboarding, and gymnastics. Therefore, unless you have experience with one of the previous, you are going to need to take some lessons.

Surf-Store helps give us insight on kiteboarding. To kiteboard you use a board with or without foot-straps, combined with the power of a large controllable kite to push the rider and the board across the water. It’s popularity has increased with the improvements in equipment, making it easier to transport and safer to learn the sport. However, even with changes in equipment it is still recommended that you take a few lessons first so there is less risk of injury.

Where To Kiteboard?

Since many of you aren’t near the U.K. or Vietnam, which are claimed to be some of the most popular kiteboarding destinations, the safest bet is for you to try kiteboarding on the beautiful Emerald Coast of Florida.

The Emerald Coast has several launch locations with both choppy and calm conditions, if on a barrier Island. Here are a few places in Fort Walton Beach, FL that are worth a visit. It is always advised to launch away from people. Even if you know what you are doing, they may not.

Ft. Walton Beach

  • Leeside Park on Okaloosa Island is a popular launch spot. As this is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, boarders need to be aware of park rules.
  • Beasley Park is across the highway from Leeside Park. There is typically a small gulf chop here, with a southerly wind.
  • The Boardwalk is also a popular location, yet it is typically very crowded.
  • The Dunes is a location away from most beach users. It is a place locals tend to go to escape the touristy areas. Be aware that it is a part of a nature preserve.

Most of these destinations are about a 10 minute drive from The Breakers, depending on the time of year.
