What is it about the beach that makes even the simplest of activities feel like a major celebration? A walk along the shoreline, a nap under a beach umbrella, even dog paddling through tranquil waters feels larger than it is. We can’t answer that question, but we can tell you if you think a walk along the beach is something special, just wait until there is really something to celebrate! When you visit during Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, and Earth Hour, your vacation is going to be even more spectacular as you celebrate these exciting Fort Walton Beach events!
Mardi Gras in Fort Walton Beach, March 5th
Mardi Gras in Fort Walton Beach and Destin could be compared to that larger celebration that takes place a few states west of us, but we think it’s so much better! Offering glitz, glamour, beads, and costumes, and then adding in sunny skies, emerald waters, and sugary white sand beaches, our week-long celebration is a really good thing! Starting on March 1stwith a Mardi Gras Parade at the World of Beer in Destin Commons and celebrating each day through the 5thwith masquerade balls, live concerts, and a pet’s costume parade, your Fat Tuesday celebrations promise to be unlike any you’ve ever experienced before!
St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th
In real life when a holiday falls on a week day, you either celebrate on the closest weekend day (boring!) or plan on wearing your sunglasses to noon the day after and working through the mother of all hangovers. Both ideas are less than great, but neither apply to you; you’re on vacation and you can sleep the entire next day after your St. Paddy’s Day celebrations! Oh, and if you’re wondering where you can show your Irish to the world, The Irish Street Festival and Grogg Games start at noon in Destin at the HarborWalk Village; featuring beer and whiskey tastings, arts and crafts, and a pub crawl destined to bring out the Irish in everyone, this exciting event has long been a favorite on the Emerald Coast!
Earth Hour, March 30th
If Earth Hour is something new to you, don’t worry, it’s relatively new to everyone. This event began in Australia in 2007 and is as simple as flipping a switch—literally! For one hour (8:30PMto 9:30 PM) in countries all over the world, people turn off their lights, saving electricity, lessening light pollution, and impacting the world in a positive way! No, it’s not a crazy celebration filled with lots of alcohol and crazy moments, but it will allow you to enjoy the amenities of your cozy condo from The Breakers! Pour yourself a glass of wine, turn off the lights, and sit out on the balcony under the glow of the moonlight beaming down on the waters below. These intimate moments often turn out to be the highlight of your vacation, and knowing you’re doing good will add an extra glow to your occasion!
